Gabriele Basilico
Actar
1999
Incomparably sharp portrait of Milan photographed in 1997. Basilico situates his story around 3 zones through which he reveals a social and economic topography of the urban landscape. The first zone, the citadel, is situated between the 2 stations and is developed after WWII and reveals the ambition, aggressiveness and naivety that the political events and economic illusions of the post-war years have given it. The second zone constitutes the inner circle, the historical center to which Milan owns its unique identity. The third zone is formed by the suburbs, the most complex and cosmopolitan area where new and unexpected skin layers develop. Here the great metropolis undergoes its final metamorphosis before the arrival of the third millennium.
